Yoga is a unique system of physical, mental and spiritual disciplines, deeply rooted in the traditions of ancient India. It is an essential part of the Hindu philosophical heritage. However, in recent times, yoga schools and yoga experts have become more inclusive and now combine elements of Hindu, Buddhist, Chinese and Jain cultures. The West considers yoga a modern form of physical and breathing exercises. Essentially, modern yoga is a set of physical postures, called asanas, sometimes accompanied by pranayamas or breathing exercises. In many styles of modern yoga, the asanas are strung together in a seamless sequence called vinyasa, or ‘flow’ yoga, with each movement synchronized through breath.
