What treatments are available for depression?
A broad range of treatments are available for depression: Psychological Treatments: Psychological treatments aim at recognizing the harm-causing thinking and behavioral patterns of the subjects. The intent is to train them to stay resistant to triggers of stress and other complexities in their mind. Subjects are able to identify and alter their negative patterns not just during the recuperation period but for their lifetime. Few psychological therapies are: • CBT: The central tenet of Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the direct influence that our thoughts (cognition) and acts (behavior) exert on our emotions. The therapist tries to discern such problematic patterns that make the subjects prone to depression or get into the way of his/her emerging out of depression. The underlying idea is to transform these futile thoughts and behaviors into positive, rational and problem-solving ones. • IPT: Interpersonal Therapy is premised on the view that personal relationship issues are equally capable to impact or prompt depression. IPT works on patterns in interpersonal relations that are potential depression triggers, targeting to help subjects get along better with others. • MBCT: In Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, a special kind of meditation – 'mindfulness meditation' – diverts subjects’ focus on the experience of the present moment that could be good or bad. Early on, their mind is able to detect nugatory and dejection-causing thoughts and feelings. Next, subjects attempt to bypass or cope with such patterns that cause distasteful emotions about their past or future, before such feelings have fixated permanently on their minds. Medical Treatments: In some grave cases, failure of psychological treatment calls forth the need for antidepressants. Or, antidepressants may be prescribed in cases of severe depression or anxiety disorders, regardless of psychological treatment. Psychosis and bipolar disorder are just some examples of conditions treated with mood stabilizers, antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs. Self-Help Techniques: Being your own caretaker is always a good way to tackle mental disorders the natural way. The below tips will be helpful: • Healthy Lifestyle: Switch to balanced, nutritious diets, regular exercising and reposeful sleeping cycles. Cut down on substance use or any other addictions from your life. • Pastimes: Indulge in recreations that are enjoyable and stress busting, whether at home or in dedicated classes to mingle with groups. • Self-Education: Brushing up on your knowledge of depression leaves you in a better position to work out your own coping mechanism. • Socializing: Join online support groups or regional health centers to connect with people suffering with depression. Relate with or share your own experiences to handle your problem areas better. Alternatively, you can confide in supportive friends and family members to feel more freed up with your ever-present desolation.
