What are the different treatment options for male infertility?
One should consult a reproductive endocrinologist or RE for male infertility problems. Male infertility treatments treat the root cause of infertility so that pregnancy can result from sexual intercourse. This root cause differs from person to person. The most prevalent treatment methods are: • Varicocele Surgery: Varicoceles are enlarged veins within the scrotum that can diminish sperm production and sperm quality, leading to male infertility. A varicocele surgery is the solution in such cases that helps improve fertility. • Treating Hormonal Abnormalities: Testicular disorders, male hypogonadism (low testosterone secretions) or other hormonal abnormalities (related to hypothalamus, thyroid, pituitary or adrenal glands) are other causes of male infertility. Medicines or surgeries help cure the underlying hormonal abnormalities in such cases to enhance fertility. • Clearing Obstructions in the Sperm Transport System: The multiple tubes carrying sperm can get blocked due to various reasons like surgical injuries, trauma, prior infections, cystic fibrosis or inherited conditions. Sperm transport system can get blocked at any level - within the testicle, in the tubes that evacuate the testicle, in the epididymis (duct behind the testis through which sperm passes to the vas deferens), in the vas deferens (duct that sends sperm from the testicle to the urethra), near the ejaculatory ducts or in the urethra. It is possible to remove these blockages in the sperm transport system of infertility patients through a surgery. • Fertility Supplements: Infertility is not treatable in all cases. Sometimes, it is worked upon through fertility supplements. For example, D-aspartic acid (D-AA) is an aspartic acid or a kind of amino acid that increases testosterone levels and sperm count in men, positively affecting their fertility. • Home Remedies: Ashwagandha is one of the best traditional remedies for different forms of sexual dysfunction in men. It also increases their sperm count. Fenugreek seed extract supplements too increase testosterone levels, sexual power and sexual drive in men. However, it is advisable you consult a doctor first before taking any of these supplements or herbs.
