What are the best yoga asanas for beginners?
If you are taking up yoga as a beginner, here are some useful poses to start with. Remember perseverance is the key and regularity will pay off. You need not push yourself too hard trying to ace everything in the first go. Discover and go beyond your body’s potential over time. Also, the all-important yogic breathing need not be ignored right from the start. • Tadasana (Mountain Pose): ‘Tada’ means mountain and the pose gets you to stand majestically like a mountain. The foundation of all standing postures, it should ideally be the first in your daily yoga regimen. It lends strength and enhances mobility throughout the body, especially in the knees, thighs, ankles and spine. It kindles a new wave of energy and helps to harmonize your mind with the body. • Adho Mukho Svanasana (Downward Dog Pose): One of the steps in the esteemed Surya Namaskar sequence, this pose has standalone merits of its own. It involves an all-over physical stretch so that your spine, chest, hamstrings, calf muscles and back of the legs feel relieved all at once. The benefits are comparable to a complete inversion without having to fully go upside down. • Vrikshasana (Tree Pose): Poising gracefully like a tree gives you balance and focus and tones your leg and back muscles. Don’t give up as you fumble while balancing on one leg. The long-term benefits of this posture are enormous. • Balasana (Child Pose): Punctuating your sweaty sessions with the leisurely child pose is a good idea. This easy going, restful posture calms the mind and body completely. Performing it before sleep helps reduce kinks in the muscles and daily fatigue.
