Vitiligo is a skin disease characterized by the development of white skin patches on various body parts. Usually, skin and hair color are determined by melanin. Vitiligo occurs when the melanocytes – the cells that produce melanin – stop functioning or get destroyed. In many cases, vitiligo affects the mucus membranes and the eyes. Vitiligo may affect people of different skin types, but it is usually more noticeable in those with darker skin tones. The condition is not contagious or life-threatening; it is merely a cosmetic problem. However, patients do feel conscious about their looks and it can cause undue stress. Vitiligo treatments focus on restoring color to the affected areas. However, they do not prevent the recurrence or continues loss of color from the skin.Read more
