Type II schizophrenia usually manifests negative symptoms that usually develop earlier. The disorder is connected to structural abnormalities in the brain, and patients have lower premorbid functioning and poorer prognosis. Type II includes negative symptoms like poverty of speech, emotional unresponsiveness, impaired attention and reclusiveness. The patient generally has a poor history of social and educational functioning before the symptoms manifest. This type of mental disorder is unresponsive to antipsychotic medication and is believed to occur because of structural brain abnormalities.
