Yes certain viruses can turn the immune functions of our body to act against themselves rather than protect it from infections. Viruses that can cause type 1 diabetes are: mumps, German measles and coxsackie. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder meaning it triggers the immune system to work against itself. Therefore, patients with other autoimmune conditions like multiple sclerosis, Addison's anemia and Graves' disease are more susceptible to type 1 diabetes than others. Genetics (having parents/siblings with type 1 diabetes), early diet (cow milk intake during early years of life), race, ethnicity (white races more prone than others) and geography (northern countries more vulnerable than southern ones) are other risk factors to this disease.
