It is a good idea to take up meditation as it offers excellent mental and physical benefits. As a beginner, you can practice this easy meditation exercise and once you have mastered it, move on to advanced forms. Always remember, the catchword in meditation is ‘breath.’ You need to start by sitting down calmly at one spot. Close your eyes while breathing normally. Concentrate on the flow of the breath as it comes in and goes out of your internal organs – the chest, ribs, stomach and shoulders. At this stage, do not try to control your breath. Meditate in this manner for short intervals to begin with, increasing the span gradually for as long as you can sustain. Practice this meditation exercise daily in a peaceful place. A baby’s nourishment comes from what the mother eats during her pregnancy. Nutrients that expectant mothers should include in their diet for baby’s growth and development are calcium, iron, protein and folic acid. Folate or folic acid is found as Vitamin B in foods and plays a key role in preventing birth defects in the brain and spinal cord of the baby. Natural sources of folic acid are green leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, fortified cereals (breakfast cereals enriched with vitamins and minerals), and beans. Calcium and vitamin D are two more minerals essential for building the baby’s teeth and bones. If calcium falls short, it is drawn from the mother's bones. Vitamin D is found in dairy products, whereas cheese, milk, yogurt and leafy greens are sources of calcium. Iron is another nutrient needed to meet the increasing demand for blood to supply oxygen to the baby. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, a condition characterized by the shortage of healthy red blood cells in the blood that can cause fatigue, pale skin and high risk to infections. Consume vitamin C at the same time when having iron-rich foods to increase iron absorption in the body. Natural sources of iron are fish, peas, dried beans and iron-fortified cereals. You can have orange juice or lemon for Vitamin C. Lastly, protein is important for the development of the baby’s organs like the brain and heart. Its natural sources include fish, eggs, nuts, peas and dried beans.

Pre-pregnancy BMI and the mother’s and the baby's health determine how much weight gain is healthy for a pregnant woman. Given your weight and height, your pre pregnancy BMI was normal (between 18.5 and 24.9). Therefore, can you put on around 11-16 kilos during these nine months. Obesity during pregnancy can prove harmful for both the mother and the baby. Several pregnancy complications can arise, including miscarriage, repeated miscarriage, stillbirth, gestational diabetes, sleep apnea, difficult vaginal delivery, cardiac dysfunction and need for C-section along with the risk of its related complications (wound infections, etc.) Preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous condition marked by high blood pressure in pregnant women who did not suffer with the problem before can also arise. Further, obesity during pregnancy poses health issues for the baby as well. He/she may be born with fetal macrosomia which is a condition of the newborn being significantly larger and with body fat greater than normal. Fetal macrosomia can lead to injury to the baby during delivery, low blood sugar of the baby at birth, childhood obesity and metabolic syndrome in childhood. It also increases the baby’s risk of developing obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes in adulthood. Secondly, an obese mother may cause birth defects in the baby, defects that would be more difficult to detect in ultrasound due to her obesity.

Pregnant women with a BMI above 30 should definitely work on their weight for a healthy delivery. Some key guidelines that will help you in your weight management are: • Know How Much Weight You Need to Lose: It is natural for pregnant women to gain weight. However, you should keep tabs on exactly how much is too much. Consider the below while planning your weight loss regimen. • Underweight women with pre-pregnancy BMI less than 18.5 can gain around 13-18 kilos • Women with normal pre-pregnancy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 can gain around 11-16 kilos • Overweight women with pre-pregnancy BMI between 25 and 29.9 can gain around 7-11 kilos • Obese women with pre-pregnancy BMI 30 or higher can gain around 5-9 kilos • Keep a Check on Your Calorie Intake: This is considered a safe way to lose weigh during pregnancy. However, while doing so, one thing needs to be kept in mind. Under no circumstances should you lose out on essential nutrients in your diet as that’s important for the baby’s growth. Seek a clinical dietitian’s help to chart out your diet plan during pregnancy. • Exercise for Half an Hour Daily: Regular exercise not only helps a pregnant woman maintain healthy weight but also minimizes birth effects and the pain experienced during pregnancy. Safe exercise options for pregnant women are prenatal yoga, gardening, swimming, walking and jogging. However, it would be best to consult your doctor first before practicing any of these exercises.

Men can opt for different types of cardio exercises to stay fit and healthy. Some of the most effective ones include: • HIIT: HIIT training is not running. It’s a workout style that burns fat and builds muscle with quick bursts of super-intense activity to keep you burning energy even when you’ve left the gym and stopped sweating. Not only do you burn more calories but you boost metabolism and increase muscle endurance through constantly varying movements. • Compound Barbell Movements: Combine different dumbbell or barbell movements back-to-back without leaving the bar and you’ll instantly experience a surge in your heart rate. Opt for 10 rounds within 40 minutes, comprising of 35 double unders and 10 thrusters (65 pounds for women and 95 pounds for men). • Bodyweight Workouts: Go for split jumps, squat jumps, mountain climbers, and burpees to get your blood pumping. If you don’t have sufficient time or pace, burpees make a good workout session. However, make sure your chest hits the floor and you return to standing on both your feet. Jump at the top and clap your hands above the head. • Jump Rope: Jumping rope burns 10 calories a minute. Try jumping rope for 10 minutes straight or do it at intervals of one minute. • Sprinting: Sprinting not only burns fat quicker but also builds muscle. Sprint training effectively builds endurance and work capacity.
