Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder affecting 0.44 to 2.8 percent of the Indian population. The life cycle of skin cells rapidly increases, causing them to build up quickly on the skin’s surface. The additional skin cells lead to the development of red patches and scales that itch and inflict pain on the patient. Being a chronic condition, the disease comes and goes. Dermatologists recommend treatments that prevent the skin cells from developing rapidly. Unfortunately, no known cure is available for this skin disease but the symptoms are manageable. Patients should modify their lifestyle by not smoking, managing stress, and moisturizing regularly. The symptoms of psoriasis vary considerably from one person to the next. However, the common signs include itching, soreness, or burning; stiff and swollen joints; small scaling spots; red patches covered with silvery, thick scales; and pitted, thickened or ridged nails. The patches range from a couple of spots resembling dandruff-like scaling to full-blown eruptions that spread across large areas. Psoriasis goes through cycles, flaring for a couple of weeks or months, then dissipating for some time or even going into total remission.Read more
