Protein-energy malnutrition is a condition characterized by the shortage of dietary protein and/or energy in the foods consumed. It is caused by the deficiency of any and all nutrients in the body. The condition results from acute shortage of food or chronic deprivation. You can prevent PEM with these tips: • Have lots of fruits and vegetables • Consume starchy foods like rice, bread, potatoes, etc. • Take dairy products like milk to some extent • Consume non-starchy protein foods like fish, eggs, meat, beans, etc. moderately PEM is treated in various ways including oral feeding, avoiding lactose, environmental changes, appetite stimulants, oral zinc supplements and dietary therapies.
