There are several remedial measures available for depression that are considered safe for both mother and the breastfeeding baby. Incorporate the following into your care plan: • Bright Light Therapy: This treatment involves the use of light boxes that are commercially available. Use UV screened light boxes with 10,000 lux illumination for half an hour within 10 minutes of waking. • Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy helps alleviate the effects of postpartum depression. The most commonly used essential oils for treating this condition include jasmine, bergamot, lavender, rose, sandalwood, and ylang ylang. • Massage Therapy: Massage therapy provides short-term improvements in stress and mood during the postpartum period. • Reiki, counseling, and psychotherapy (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
