PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome is a common hormonal imbalance that affects nearly one out of 10 women. Females as young as 11 years of age may develop PCOS. The symptoms of this condition usually manifest as the absence of periods, irregular menstrual cycle, or heavy flow during periods. Pelvic pain is experienced by some patients while others report acne and patches of thick, dark skin. Weight gain might be an issue for some women and others find it difficult to shed excess flab. Hirsutism is also reported by many women with polycystic ovaries. If a woman suffers from one or more of the abovementioned signs, it is recommended they consult a doctor. Women with PCOS may have extra androgens. Although androgens are commonly known as male hormones, women have them too. But the quantity is higher in PCOS patients, leading to excess hair, acne, irregular periods, weight gain, and other signs of PCOS. Unfortunately, the precise cause behind the development of PCOS remains unknown. However, most of the associated symptoms stem from hormonal problems or the natural chemicals of the body. A lot of patients report too much insulin, a hormone responsible for converting food into energy. Additional levels of insulin lead to darkened skin on the neck, behind the knees, and other parts of the body.
