Obesity is a medical condition occurring in people carrying so much excess body fat or weight that it eventually affects their health. Individuals with a high body mass index normally suffer from obesity. Body mass index or BMI is a common tool used by doctors everywhere to determine whether a person is at the suitable weight for their height, age, and sex. The measurement takes both height and weight into account. When the BMI of a person ranges between 25 and 29.9, it means they have excess body weight. However, if the BMI touches or exceeds the 30 mark, it is a sign of obesity. Other factors that indicate the health of a person’s body shape and weight include waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), along with the distribution and amount of fat on the body. People who are obese can increase their chances of developing various health conditions, including arthritis, metabolic syndrome, and some forms of cancer. Metabolic syndrome includes a collection of issues, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure. It is important for individuals to maintain a healthy weight or lose excess weight through exercise and diet to reduce or prevent obesity. In a few instances, surgery may be required.Read more
