Heavy menstrual bleeding, including blood clots, are referred to as abnormal uterine bleeding when it happens outside the regular menstruation cycle. This is a common gynaecological problem and tends to be difficult to diagnose. Abnormal uterine bleeding mainly depends on whether a woman is premenopausal, perimenopausal, or postmenopausal. Causes range from pregnancy to the use of hormonal contraceptives, hormonal imbalances, endometrial polyps, fibroids, and sometimes, even cancerous or precancerous growths.
