HIV spreads from one person to the other when infected semen, vaginal fluids, or blood enter the body. Since the symptoms are initially mild, people with this disease often do not realize they are infected until it is too late. Unfortunately, they often spread HIV to other individuals without even knowing it. HIV spreads through sexual activity, mainly vaginal sex and anal sex, by getting stuck with a needle carrying an infected individual’s blood, and through the sharing of needles for tattooing or injecting drugs. HIV may even pass from mother to child at the time of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or childbirth. But HIV cannot spread via holding hands, sharing drinking glasses or utensils, sneezing or coughing, and sweat, spit, vomit, stool or urine.
