A gestational diabetes preventive diet should include whole grains and complex carbs and exclude refined carbs. This means you can have oats, brown rice, sweet potatoes, yams, barley, rye, potatoes with skin and need to eliminate fruit juices, white bread, white pasta, white rice and sugary foods (cakes, pastries) from your diet. High-fiber foods are another great option to consume due to their blood sugar, blood cholesterol and triglycerides controlling action. Examples: veggies, fruits, whole grains, nuts, beans, legumes, etc. Proteins are nutrients that do not spike blood sugar levels. You can get your daily proteins from eggs, veggies and chickpeas. Omega-3 fatty acids are also important and can be gained from vegetarian sources like walnuts, flaxseeds, canola oil and non-vegetarian sources like fish.
