There are numerous reasons why a woman can experience early menopause. Her ovaries may naturally stop producing normal levels of specific hormones, especially oestrogen. This is also known as primary ovarian insufficiency or premature ovarian failure. The cause is still unknown but in many women it is the result of some autoimmune disease, chromosomal abnormalities like in women with Turner syndrome and specific infection, like malaria, mumps, and tuberculosis.
