I’m Mr. Banerjee and 43 years old. Our teenage daughter has been suffering from depression caused by stress for quite some time now. We are regularly visiting a doctor to help her get better but now he is prescribing medicines. What types of drugs are suggested for depression?

There are five major categories of medication used to treat depression patients. However, medicines should be your last option, and a doctor's consultation is necessary. Self medication can prove harmful. • SNRIs and SSRIs: The most commonly prescribed antidepressants, they are used to treat mood disorders, anxiety problems and have fewer side effects compared to other antidepressants. • TCAs: Tricyclic antidepressants are used for treating fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, and can even help control chronic pain. • MAOIs: These antidepressants inhibit the action of monoamine oxidase, a brain enzyme, and are used to treat various mental health disorders. • NASSAs: These antidepressants are prescribed in cases of anxiety disorders, depression, and certain personality disorders.
