Depression is characterized by a prolonged state of feeling low, upset and dejected, along with a loss of interest in everyday activities. After a point, the condition interferes with everyday life, and patients must consult a psychiatrist. Depression has a higher incidence among women than men. Depression is by no means temporary and lingers for a period of six to eight months.
