About Depression
Depression is characterized by a prolonged state of feeling low, upset and dejected, along with a loss of interest in everyday activities. After a point, the condition interferes with everyday life, and patients must consult a psychiatrist. WHO considers depression one of the leading causes of disability and the most prevalent illness worldwide with approximately 350 million individuals already affected. Depression has a higher incidence among women than men. Depression is by no means temporary and lingers for a period of six to eight months. It is different from mood fluctuations experienced on a day-to-day basis. Also, emotional reactions to everyday life situations do not classify as depression. Grieving over the deceased is also not depression, unless it lasts a really long time.
