About Dementia

Dementia refers to a collection of symptoms, such as personality change, problematic intellectual functions, and memory loss that stem from brain trauma or disease. These changes are not a normal aspect of ageing and often manifest so severely that they affect daily independence, relationships, and living. Although most people associate dementia with Alzheimer’s Disease – the most common variety – there are several other forms of this condition, including mixed and vascular dementia. Patients are likely to experience a noticeable decline in learning, problem solving, communication, and remembering. These changes take place either quickly or very slowly over a period of time. The outcome and progression of the disease vary, but are mainly determined by the kind of dementia and the part of the brain that is affected. Once people come to terms with the idea of dementia, their perceptions inevitably shift and start affecting their priorities and relationships. However, just because a person experiences the symptoms of this disease doesn’t mean their normal life is coming to an end. Some kinds of dementia may be slowed or even reversed if the problem is detected in a timely manner. It all starts with understanding the differences between regular memory loss and dementia symptoms, and identifying the types of dementia. No matter what the final diagnosis is, there are a lot of things a person can do to slow the symptoms and continue enjoying a rich, rewarding life.
