Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is the term used to describe several progressive lung diseases, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. A lot of people with COPD suffer from these conditions. Emphysema gradually destroys air sacs present in the lungs, interfering with the outward flow of air. Bronchitis leads to inflammation and narrows the bronchial tubes, leading to mucus build-up. Smoking tobacco is the leading cause of COPD. Long-term exposure to various chemical irritants may also result in COPD. The disease usually develops over an extended period. Diagnosis is done with the help of blood tests, lung function examinations, and imaging tests. Unfortunately, no cure exists for COPD till now, but regular treatment is capable of reducing or relieving some symptoms, preventing further complications, and improving the overall quality of life. Common forms of treatment include supplemental oxygen therapy, surgery, and medication. If left untreated, COPD leads to quicker disease progression, worsens respiratory diseases, and heart problems.Read more
