Doctors usually prescribe fiber-dense foods in case an individual has been diagnosed with mild constipation. Fiber supplements, such as psyllium, methylcellulose or calcium polycarbophil are also recommended. These drugs are bulk adding agents that give weight to stool. For moderate or severe constipation, OTC laxatives should be taken that soften the stools and increase their frequency. Surgery is the treatment option available for complex conditions like rectal prolapse and rectocele. Finally, dyssynergic defecation is treated with anorectal biofeedback.
