Men develop dandruff more commonly than women. While not a cause in itself, sweating can irritate the scalp and cause flaking, leading to more intense dandruff than what is already present. Wash off the sweat immediately after your exercise sessions are over to prevent flare-ups. Dandruff is often caused by the yeast Pityrosporum orbiuclare that feeds on scalp oils. Having oily skin or oil accumulation on the scalp by not washing your hair regularly can lead to dandruff. Another common cause are hair products that contain ingredients not suitable for all skin types. Seborrheic dermatitis or eczema, a skin condition characterized by red, greasy and irritated skin with flaky scales and dandruff is another risk factor. The fungal-yeast, Malassezia, found on the scalp of most adults can also trigger skin cells to multiply and shed in the form of white flakes called dandruff.
