Asthmatics often have a tendency to breathe faster than people who have normal lung functioning. There are also those people who become mouth breathers because it helps them draw more air into the passageways. This exposes the lungs to cooler and drier air that is unfortunately a major trigger for asthma. Thus, as a result, patients often need rescue medicine more than usual. Breathing exercises are good for this reason because they encourage shallow breathing at a controlled rate and tend to actually reduce the symptoms of asthma with time.
