Angad Mathur here. I am a civil servant, 34 years old. My 27 year old cousin has started showing signs of depression. We took him to doctor bnut he failed to find a clear reason why. What could be the biological causes of depression in him?

The hippocampus of the brain is smaller in people with depression and contains fewer serotonin receptors. The precise cause is not known. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is excessively produced in depressed people. Cortisol apparently has a shrinking effect on the hippocampus’ development.
