About Anxiety

Everyone feels anxious at some point in their lives. Anxiety experienced within limits is perfectly natural. In fact, it is a healthy emotion unless experienced in disproportionate levels. As per the American Psychological Association (APA), anxiety is "an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure." The perception of danger often causes an adrenalin rush in the body, triggering anxious reactions in the brain or fight-or-flight reactions. In response, we either attempt to face the potential threat head-on or evade it entirely. However, anxious feelings of a certain duration or intensity may indicate a serious mental disorder and require medical intervention by a psychiatrist. Anxiety disorders are mental health conditions characterized by excessive and unexplained apprehension, stress, nervousness, disquiet and fear from the original stressor. These disorders may take a toll on the perceptions, emotions and conduct of the subjects. Interference with everyday life can be expected due to manifestations in the form of both psychological and physical symptoms. According to APA, individuals with anxiety disorders suffer from recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns.
